“The college has created many opportunities for students to contribute to the college, local, national and international community and this is excellent.”

Ofsted 2009

The Global Dimension flourishes at KEVICC.

In October 2007 KEVICC achieved the International School Award in recognition of our many and varied connections with other schools around the world and of the way the global dimension is embedded in several curriculum areas.

We are currently reapplying to keep this status for September 2010 onwards as it is a three year rolling programme.

We believe this year we are involving our students in an even greater number of projects that widens their understanding of different nations and their cultures. We will be doing this through many curriculum based schemes of work to collapsed timetable days where students spend a focussed amount of time looking at different aspects of the Global Dimension.

Many cross curricular themes will be identified and brought out this year.

Our International Links:

The Mathieson Music School, Kolkata

This international link has been going since 2005. We have had a number of reciprocal visits, with UK teachers working with Mathieson students and the Indian teachers taking part in our curriculum activities. The Mathieson School is an independent, charity supported music school for talented musicians living in deprived circumstances. We are learning from each other. The British Council has been supporting this work. We have exchanged stories, letters and music making. The students now exchange work in projects based in Year 7 Rivers Voices Project, Year 8 Cultural Awareness Project and the Year 9 Futures Project. The aim of the link with Mathieson is to share teaching and learning strategies and to gain a better understanding of each other's cultures.

Colegio Juan Bravo, Spain

KEVICC is one of eight schools chosen to be involved in a new international link that is a new innovative project. Set up by Tim Arnold, Adviser for Digital Media Education for Devon Education Services, the aim is to develop international and intercultural links through the use of videoconferencing equipment.

Aims of the project:

1. To enhance the linguistic development and advancement of our students by offering them the opportunity of a strong link and regular communication, through a range of mediums, with native Spanish students.

2. To encourage the development of attitudes of tolerance, respect and understanding towards other languages, cultures and countries.

3. To bring our cultures closer together

KEVICC has been lucky to have had our Head of MFL Louise Blondell as the driving force behind this project.
