Courier Autumn 2015 - page 22-23

Sports Day is always a fantastic event for
the whole College to enjoy and always
comes with the challenges of the weather! This year was particularly difficult due
to the often wet, and very unpredictable, summer weather we were experiencing
at the time.
The day started for us at 7am, setting up the field ready for the big event. The areas
were staked and taped; the equipment was out; the gazebos were up, along with
some tents for shelter, and the music system was in place, courtesy of ex-student
Elliot Darby. The high jump mats had to stay indoors this year due to recent wet
weather, and the hurdles were posed ready to be put out so long as the weather
was on our side for the day. The spectators were on the field ready to cheer on their
fellow students and we were ready to begin.
The
field
events
were
underway as the first track
events started. Last year we
introduced two new events
to our Sports Day – Archery
and Wacky Races; fantastic
additions to our variety of athletics events which allowed students to
compete in mixed teams. This year, these events featured again, with
great success, with the Wacky Races taking prime position on the 100m
section of the track in front of the spectators.
Another recently new event is the all-inclusive relay – another wonderful
event where the spectators cheer on our students right to the finish,
and some even ran with them to finish the last 50m. This concluded
our morning’s events and the barbecue was ready. Lunch on the field
included a dance-off event led by Miss O’Neill! Two records had been
beaten, including the girls' year 7 Shot Putt which has stood since 2001
at 7.14m and was broken by Jasmine Scott-Taylor in year 7 who threw
7.73m. The year 9 Boys' Long Jump record, which has stood since 1996
at 5.20, was broken by Harvey Harrington in year 9 jumping 5.24m.

KEVICC Sports Day: July 2015
After lunch we continued the pace of field and track events. The exciting 100m
races on the track saw an amazing achievement by two year 10 boys breaking
our 100m record that has stood for 30 years! R. Lamble made the record in 1985
where he ran the 100m in 11.84 seconds, and this year it was jointly broken by
Shay Pomeroy and Stephano Catalano crossing the finish line at exactly the
same time in 11.76 seconds. The year 9 Babbage Boys' Relay A team added to
the record-breaking day, setting a new record of 52.66 seconds for this event.
The day ended with the traditional celebration of performances and the
presentation of the trophies, some of which have a long history in the College.
Mr Salt presented the trophies to various students for their achievements
throughout the day, and the house shield was presented to the winning house –
Davis with 1332 points – who now remain unbeaten for two years. Second place
went to last year’s third place winners, Babbage, with 1225 points.
We are most grateful to many people for making KEVICC Sports Day 2015
possible overcoming a range of challenges and for making it a success; Keith
Jones, our grounds keeper, for ensuring that the fields were ready for us to use;
the athletes for performing with such confidence and prowess; the spectators
for creating the atmosphere; Mrs Crellen for her management of the Wacky
Races event; Totnes Archers for providing our Archery competition; Elliot Darby
for music entertainment, the staff of KEVICC for their continued support of this
event in various ways; the KEVICC catering department for their support; Kevin
Creber for the PA system; and finally the wonderful P.E. department for their
hard work and effort.

Gifted & Talented
We launched Totnes SUPERSTARS this term – our
programme for those within our learning community who
have been identified as being Gifted, Talented and Able
in PE. The first session involved completing a range of
tests within a sporting context, including agility, reaction
time, speed, accuracy and many others. The pupils who
attended proved we have some real
Superstars
in our
learning community!
Football Central Venue League
This saw South Brent return to begin the defence of
their crown and we welcomed a new team from Berry
Pomeroy, with both teams making a fantastic start to their
campaign, remaining unbeaten. The standard of play on
all pitches was outstanding, with fine examples of fair play
and sportsmanship.
Central Venue Basketball League
Recently launched at KEVICC! Our first ever Primary School
basketball fixtures.
SEND Paralympic Festival
In October we held our very first fully inclusive SEND
(Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) event. The event
was well attended and all had a fantastic time.
Your leaders were really good today! They made some
really good bonds with our kids, as well as running the
events, so well done to you and your team for training
them up so well.
Dan Smith, Dartington
To all the staff and students whomade our pupils' morning
so fabulous - THANK YOU! Our children had the best time
with you at this Sports event. We really appreciate all your
kindness and hard work.

High 5 Netball Festival
Over thecourseof twodelightful sunnymornings inOctober,
nearly 300 pupils from Berry Pomeroy, Broadhempston,
Dartington, The Grove, Landscove, South Brent and Diptford
came to KEVICC to participate in a High 5 Netball Festival.
The festivals were organised by the KEVICC year 10 Sports
Leaders who led activities which enabled the participants
to work on their passing, shooting, footwork, gameplay and
teamwork. Each individual workshop lasted for 15 minutes
and pupils rotated around so they could have a go at all of
them. Primary students were awarded stickers for a variety
of positive attributes that they had shown throughout the
day including knowledge, demonstrating skills, helping
others and effort.
A huge amount of sport goes on at KEVICC, during
the College day and out of hours: this is just a
glimpse of some of it. See more on our website!
