Courier Summer 2021

Page 2 A word from the Principal Great weather and brighter summer evenings always bring the best out of KEVICC; and we have certainly seen the very best of the college this past term. Enrichment projects, like Science Week , the Reading Challenge , the annual Geography field visit to Start Bay and the incredible array of Performing Arts shows , have opened up opportunities to so many of our young people; allowing them to truly shine and flourish in and out of the classroom. In these pages we see the rounded, life changing education we strive to provide. Be it the immeasurable work of the Mary Lidstone Trust , which provides funding to our students as they move into further education (pages 11 & 12); or the amazing work Jacquie does with our students to get their creative writing published each year (page 22); or brilliant links we have fostered with tertiary education providers like Exeter College, Oxford (page 13). This is the kind of work that really excites us. Highlights of this edition for me are: the farewell we gave to our Year 11 and 13s. We celebrated together at the back end of May, a lovely sunny Thursday which involved (as is tradition now) doughnuts, shirt-signing, yearbooks and a staff rendition of Times Like These (never have our staff sounded so gloriously choral!) Be sure to look at the quality of the art in Summer Open - our current exhibition in the Ariel Centre. Some of the fine art is jaw-droppingly good. Be inspired by the sporting alumni featured in this edition - whilst these students attended the college before my time as Principal - the tradition of helping to nurture independent, committed, resilient young adults still stands true today. Kieffer Moore, Ollie Payne and Ryan Stevenson are great role models. Also be sure to read about the incredible collective effort of our staff who've run, cycled, swam and walked some 3,000km! Lastly, a thank you to all of you - our students, parents and carers. Your support, dedication and kindness over this past year has helped us navigate some choppy waters. We are now, hopefully, through the worst of that - and looking ahead to a well-deserved Summer. Wishing all the best. Alan Salt #TheSchoolForTotnes
