The Sweet Investigation
What is the most popular colour in a packet of
sweets?
This is the question my year 8X2 class
wanted to answer.
We each decided on a personal hypothesis, then
developed a class hypothesis :- Orange will be the
most popular colour in our sweets.
The class brought in various packets of sweets to
conduct the experiment. They emptied out their
sweets, counted them then grouped them into
colours. Some of the class chose to represent their
data by making a Bar Graph using their sweets; some
chose to make a Pie Chart. They found the modal
colour and saw if their original hypothesis was true.
We then compared all the class data to see if the class hypothesis was true...it wasn't...yellow
was the most popular colour.

Students' thoughts
The investigation was good because it
was fun and yet still taught us about Pie
Charts and Bar Graphs. The best bit was
that at the end of the investigation, we
got to eat our sweets. It was good to be
able to actually use something that was
in front of you other than a worksheet
or a book.

I really enjoyed the hands-on approach,
moving my sweets around to create the
different graphs
BS
This was a fun lesson and I now
understand how to draw a Pie Chart

bar graphs, using our sweets.

advance the education of children
and young people in mathematics.
They organise national Mathematics competitions
and other Mathematical enrichment activities for
11-18 year old UK school pupils.
Last academic year over 600,000 pupils from over
4,000 schools took part in the three individual
challenges - the UK's biggest national Maths
competitions.
