A year 7 class was recently set an research project to complete by teacher Sarah
Kehaya. She asked them to do some investigation on Simon Weston, and to make
up a leaflet detailing how he, awarded the CBE in January, turned the negatives to
positives in his life. Why? And who is he? A veteran of the British Army, Simon has
become well known throughout the United Kingdom for his recovery and charity
work after suffering severe burn injuries during the Falklands War in the 1980s.
In 1982 he was aboard the Sir Galahad when it was destroyed at Bluff Cove in
the Falklands Islands. He suffered 46% burns to his body, and went on to have
numerous operations. However, he says he was one of the lucky ones. He survived.
A thoughtful challenge for Year 7s
Students in the class Jess Day and Thomas Rogers each
excelled at the task - Jess because of her beautifully
presented leaflet and Thomas? Well, having found that his
father was able to contact Simon Weston through Linkedin,
Thomas simply phoned him! And found that Simon was
more than happy to answer questions such as
What was it
like on the boat?
(It was bombed and set on fire by the
Argentians) and
How did you cope with all the injuries?
Rotary Speak Out 2016
KEVICC were delighted to welcome the local Rotary
Club again for their annual Speak Out! and Literacy
Day when local primary schools attended, along
with KEVICC students. Prizes were awarded to
Totnes Young Writers and Young Photographers,
and Speak Out! presentations were made by teams
from the visiting schools, with feedback made
from a panel of Rotarians.
Charlie Rose-Button, Beth Holder & Jasmine
Leate were KEVICC Young Writer winners at the
Intermediate Level; now entered for the District
Level, as is Aubrey Simpson for the Young
Photographer Competition, all on the
Our Beautiful
World
theme.
We were also priviledged that the Rotary Club had
managed to get Tanya Landman, Carneige Medal
winner for 2015 for her book
Buffalo Soldier
, to
come and speak, and her talk was enthralling,
amusing (especially about her pig!) and full of
practical advice and help for aspiring authors.
