Careers Fair & Options Evening
Parents and students from years 9, 10, 11 and the Sixth Form from Kennicott were
invited to the sixth annual ‘Preparing to Succeed’ Careers Fair in January.
It was rewarding to see so many students from each year group making the most
of the information on offer. For year 9, there were the talks in the theatre explaining
the ‘Options process’ and then advice from teachers about their particular subject
field, with a further opportunity to visit the Careers Fair. Year 10s came along to talk
to find out the opportunities for work experience; year 11 and Sixth Form students
were able to meet a whole host of Further and Higher Education providers, and find
out about apprenticeships that are there to be discovered.
The purpose of the Fair was to expand the horizons of our students and build up
their career aspirations as they take the next step into choosing their future options/
pathway. This combined event is a good opportunity for parents and students to
talk to tutors, teachers and a variety of Business’ and Further/Higher Education
providers who very kindly volunteer their time to talk about the qualifications
required for their particular interest/career path.
There was representation from Centrax, Flybe, Cavanna Homes, Galliford Try, Deep
Blue Sound (City College Plymouth), Nadia Connabeer (Apprentice of the Year),
Amanda Marsden Salon, Dartington Trust (Volunteers), Total ICT, Exeter, Plymouth,
Marjon and Falmouth Universities, Peninsula Medical School, Bicton, Bridgwater
and South Devon Colleges, Totnes Police, NHS, Vocational and Apprenticeship
Training Advisers.

At the beginning of the February half term, a small group
of KEVICC students boarded a coach to Switzerland for the
ski trip to the resort of Saas Grund. After a long journey we
arrived at our destination, tired and relieved to be there.
We had an hour to unpack and then went down for dinner
and ski fittings; this was followed by bed, and dreams of
our first day on the slopes.
Sunday morning came with an early start, as our lessons
started at 10am, meeting our ski instructors and heading
out onto the pistes – where there was lovely fresh powder
from the snow the day before. For lunch we picnicked. We
had five days full of skiing, and got to travel to another
resort of Saas Fee as well, where we got to ski along
side the ice walls of the glacier and ski from the highest
mountain in Switzerland
In the evenings, we did lots of activities. We tried Ice
Stock, which is like curling, but without the brushes. It was
great fun and we had a mini tournament. We also went
and watched two local teams play ice hockey, which was
exciting as I'd never watched it before. One of the students
from Teignmouth even got to keep a puck.
Another night, we did a quiz which the
teachers won, but they weren’t allowed the
prize which went to the runners-up, who
were mostly students from KEVICC. We
also went sledging which was great fun,
and I got to go really fast down the steep
bits. I even crashed into Miss Cox at one
point as she wasn’t very good at steering
her sledge and had crashed into the side.
The Swiss hospitality was excellent,
with friendly staff in the hotel where the
facilities were of a good standard. We were
also lucky enough to have Mr Blake as our
Ski Rep for the week who looked after us
very well.
