Sixth Form Alumni Spotlight
Katie Phillips
Katie joined Kennicott in September 2014
and was a pleasure to have in the Sixth Form. I
recently managed to catch up with Katie to ask
her thoughts of her time at Kennicott and find out
what life is like at university:
Studying at Kennicott was very different to
school. I felt that we were given much more
freedom which enabled me to become a far more
individual thinker and increased my confidence
dramatically. I especially liked the community
you build whilst at Kennicott with both the
students and teachers.
My experience at the Sixth Form is one that I will
never forget and I am so grateful for everyone's
continuous support over my two years there. I
am currently studying English at the University
of Exeter and it has already been such a great
experience. The lectures are imaginative which helps you
stay focused, and the seminars allow you to expand on
your ideas with the help of an expert in the subject. Living
with flatmates in Halls is particularly good as it enabled
me to immediately make close friends with my flatmates
and although there is a heavy work load, there is also a
great social life with events always being held.
Katie is a young carer and, during her time at
Kennicott, juggled her commitments at home
whilst studying for her A Levels. Despite Katie’s
home circumstances, she continued to work
hard. With her commitment and dedication, she
achieved extremely good grades.
Katie applied to the Mary Lidstone Trust for
financial support to support her degree and was
successful in securing a grant.
Roy Lidstone put in place arrangements,
after Mary’s death in 2010, to create the Mary
Lidstone Charitable Trust to benefit students
of KEVICC. As a College we are very fortunate to
have a benefactor who supports young people
to follow their academic dream which might
otherwise, through financial difficulties, not be
possible. Mary and Roy’s legacy will support Katie
throughout her time at university. Her bursary will go
some way to supporting her to run a car at university and
pay rent. This will certainly relieve the financial stress on
her family as a whole and allow her the knowledge that
she can easily return home at any time.
Katie has been a true inspiration and we wish her all the
best for the future!
