Courier Spring 2016 - page 22

For the first time we were able to take two teams – Callum Barber in year 7 and
Huw Paige in year 9 supported the rest of the boys in year 8. The other team
was made up entirely of year 8s who held their own, notching up two Draws
and a couple of very narrow losses, including only losing 1-0 to the eventual
Tournament Winners. There were 7 Teams in the Tournament – 3 from SDCC
and 2 from Plymstock as well as the 2
KEVICC Teams - so they all played 6 games
consisting of one half of 9minutes, with only
short breaks in-between, which certainly
tested their fitness. Top goal scorer was Alfie
with 4 goals, followed by Callumwith 3. Finn
Clark, Jacob, Luke and Luca all scored a goal each. Playing without a goalkeeper meant
both teams needed to be strong in defence and Oliver, Harri and Ed all played their part
saving a couple of certain goals on the line. A particular mention must go to Jack, who
played an amazing role in midfield. Both teams played some very thoughtful hockey
and were a pleasure to watch. They were all a real credit to the College and I look forward
to the next Tournament with great excitement.
Hockey Club runs on Thursdays with around 40 students (boys and girls) from all years
attending on a regular basis. I thank Wendy Roberts (retired PE Teacher) and Brad Selves
( 'retired' PE Technician! ) for their continued support. Their invaluable
expertise and
support is welcomed whenever they can spare the time.

U16 Boys Hockey Friendlies v Kingsbridge CC
When the following boys – TomRead (Sixth Form), Jonty
Coles, Jack Connabeer, Ross Upton, Shay Pomeroy, Kit
Cregan, Jack Carter, Owen and Luke Flower (all in year
11), Fred Mudge, Owen Edward and Josh Bowhay (year
10) and Huw Paige (year 9) went to Kingsbridge CC on
in December 2015 to play an 11-aside Hockey Game,
they got off to a slow start. The team pushed for an
equaliser right to the end, but it wasn't to be and they
were determined to come out strong for the re-match
scheduled for February 2016 .
And that is exactly what happened! Two changes to the
original line up saw Euan Johnson making his debut in
goal and Jack Bridle replacing Owen as a rolling Sub.
Both Luke and Josh had chances right from the start but it was Jack Connabeer who got his name on the score sheet five
minutes into the game – a fantastic shot taken wide from a Long Corner. The KEVICC Midfield of Tom, Jack and Jack Carter
all linked well with the Forwards – Luke, Fred, Josh and Kit – creating numerous chances to keep the Kingsbridge Goalkeeper
very busy. In the second half, KCC came out much stronger, giving the KEVICC defence a chance to show their skill under
pressure, setting the midfield on some lovely attacking runs with both wingers, Fred and Josh , putting in some powerful
crosses and even hitting the post. Finally, with 2 minutes to go, Luke scored KEVICC’s 2nd goal after some persistent linking
play from Josh, Tom and Fred. A fantastic performance all round. The KCC teacher complimented the KEVICC players on their
excellent sportsmanship and how well they played as a team. I felt extremely proud!

KEVICC continues to be blessed with an outstanding array of talent at Table
Tennis. This year we took 11 students fromyears 7 to 13 to compete in the Devon
Schools’ Table Tennis Championship at Eggbuckland Community College. The
standard was very high, with our students competing fantastically well against
the best players in the county. The highlights of the day for KEVICC came in the
under-16 and under-19 girls’ events. Lilly Goddard and Elsa Perry battled well
for the under-19 girls’ title, with Lilly eventually finishing in third place and Elsa
winning the competition. Despite injury (and illness!), Holly Johns displayed
some top quality Table Tennis skills, winning an exciting final and progressing,
along with Elsa, to represent Devon at the next stage of the competition in
Wolverhampton in April. Good luck!
