THE annual Ten Tors event on
Dartmoor was completed by three
intrepid teams from King Edward VI
Community College, despite being
hit by atrocious weather conditions.
The event allows teams of six young-
sters to take on the challenge of
walking either 35, 45 or 55 miles
over the rugged terrain, starting and
ending at Okehampton Camp on the
northern edge of the moor.
Year 10 student Ollie Tysoe, part of
the 35 mile team, takes up the story:
We awoke on the Saturday morning
at 5 am to ‘Chariots of Fire’ playing
across the camp. After a bacon bap
and quick pack-up accompanied by
the rest of the Ten Tors playlist, we left
for the start.
‘We stood at the start line with 2,400
other people. At 6 o'clock, after the
Ten Tors prayer and a good luck
message from the Brigadier in charge,
the artillery was fired and we set off.
Unfortunately, due to poor weather
conditions and injury, two from the 45
team were forced to drop out. Despite
this, the teammade good time before
they camped.
The following morning saw most
teams up at around 4 am hoping to
make it back to Okehampton as early
as possible, and before the cut-off
time of 5 pm. After a quick breakfast,
we left our tor camp at 6.15 am and
were on our way.
Ten Tors
success for KEVICC students
The weather was better on the Sunday
and we were in better spirits now the
end was in sight. The walking was
tough, but all the navigation was
good and we made good time, getting
back to camp just before 4 pm.
Getting over the final hill and seeing
the campsite made it all worth it. As
soon as we were in, we were whisked
off to a presentation and then given a
nice hot pasty.
Only about five minutes after us,
the 55 team made it in after a really
strong walk on the second day. And,
shortly after them, the remaining 45
team finished after an equally strong
effort.
This account does not really do justice
to the event itself or all the fantastic
people that helped train us and
walked with us. There were many who
helped us along the way and on the
day of the event and we all want to
say a massive thank you.’
