wood sculpture project
The Elements
This impressive piece was carved by Sixth
Form Art students Jess Walker, Lucy Harvey,
Jack Williams and Kristian Stapleton,
working with local artist Isabel Coulton. Each
worked on their own individual Element.
Isabel said:
I think having well displayed
student sculpture around the college encour-
ages a feeling of pride in one's environment
and also decorates and enhances our exteri-
or. Having student sculpture becoming part
of the fabric of school creates a pride for all
those involved and it should be seen as quite
an honour to have one's handiwork displayed
prominently for all to see and admire
.
Nine students from years
10-13 designed and carved
a panel of oak each on the
subject of exploring
Texture,
Light and Shade
.
Working with sculptor Isabel
Coulton, the panels were re-
alised over a six week period,
working for two hours at a
time. The students thorough-
ly enjoyed working under the
tutelage of such an inspiring
artist and learnt the rudiments
of wood carving, using gouges
and a mallet.

The works are mounted on a stainless steel frame on the outside of the College
that encourages the unity of the pieces to become one sculpture, all lending a
different approach to the subject, be it representational or abstract.
They make an very attractive addition to our Entrance and Reception area.
Spring in the Gallery
has delivered a series of
outstanding exhibitions.
We were delighted to welcome back
the 21 Group after a long break
from exhibiting These 21 artists
are committed to high standards
and individual creativity; demon-
strating approaches, techniques
and media to offer viewers a rich
variety of images. Whilst much
of their work is based upon land-
scape, other subjects and abstract
pieces also feature. The 21 Group is
one of the longest established ex-
hibiting groups in the South West.
Wewere lucky tohavefivemembers
from the South West Sculptors
Association exhibiting together in
an exhibition entitled
More Than
2 Dimensions
. Luke Shepherd,
Audrey Ryder, Isabel Coulton, Ani
Buckland and Jean Lock engaged
our students with their unique and
different approach to making three
dimensional forms. Our students
found the work stimulating and
refreshing, perhaps because with
sculpture there are actual objects
to see, making the artists process
very much more accessible. The
exhibition included bronze; bog
oak pieces; carvings with a chain-
saw and castings made from clay.
Alethea Koos has been this year's
artist in residence on the Totnes
Art and Design Foundation Course
Her residency will culminate in a
final exhibition ALETHEA WAZ 'ERE
our Gallery from the 11-21 July.
